Direct to Garment Printing (DTG)
June 4th, 2008 by Jan
Direct to garment printing is a great option for people looking for a fast supply of a limited number of personalised t shirts, ideal for people’s pictures for stag and hen night t shirts and promotional t shirts.
What is it? A relatively new process which allows full colour printing direct onto the garment. No screens, no transfers or sublimation techniques.
DTG printers, are at the very basic level ink jet printers. A tray holds a platen onto which the t-shirt is placed and which then moves under the print-head. This has some small limitations regarding speed but, requires very little set-up time.
Why use it?
- For standard screen printing, screens have to be made before the job can be run.
- For transfer printing quantities often need to be larger in order to make them more cost effective.
- For runs of up to 50 items DTG printing is the best approach.
What garment is most suitable?
- We recommend White 100% Cotton T-Shirts as the best medium, but coloured shirts can be accommodated too.
- Good finishes are achieved on our Blue max and Gildan brands.
- Sweatshirts and Polo shirts can also be successful.
What are the benefits to the customer?
- Can be used on White and Dark garments
- No screens required, so fast to produce
- Artwork is easy. A high resolution jpeg is all that is required.
- Even print quality once set up.
- Fantastic detail can be achieved from very intricate designs
- Print area up to A3.
What are the limitations with the process?
- Coloured T-Shirts need to be pre treated
- Cost per item is higher at high volumes so chose screen or transfer printing for more than 50 items.
- The initial artwork needs to be of good enough quality
What are the ideal customers for DTG printing?
- Customers requiring short run (up to 50) garments whose design contains a lot of colours (and probably have left it until the last minute!); such as;
- Hen and Stag Nights
- Corporate Events
- Charity Events
- Small companies requiring short run printing full colour logos
- Promotional Events
- Magazine Launches
- Sports Tours
- Children’s Clubs.
- Fun gifts for surprise parties.
We have just introduced our own Direct to Garment Printing services especially targetted at promotional t shirts.
